The Word and Music

David and the army commanders then appointed men from the families of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to proclaim God’s messages to the accompaniment of lyres, harps, and cymbals. Here is a list of their names and their work: [1 Chronicles 25.1]

Two things are notable here: God's Word was to be repeated, and it was to be repeated in the form of music.

Judging by the number of people dedicated to this task of singing God's Word to music, it would appear this was certainly more than a part-time job.

From this information, we might also make some conclusions about how this applies to the New Testament Church. Since we are no longer required to meet with God at a Temple, but in fact ARE the Temple of God, music should remain very much an educational part of personal devotion to Him.

This however does not negate the role of music when God's people come together in corporate meetings. Just like pastors, preachers and teachers minister at "church," so musicians should be included in that contingency. If we decipher anything from this passage in 1 Chronicles, it should be that musicians and singers play an equally important role in bringing the Word of God to the people!

Well...

Father, help the New Testament Church as we know it today be open to the idea that just maybe we may not do everything right. Help us to be willing to adjust our devotion to You so that we might best please You!
