Intimacy With God

“And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the LORD sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. [1 Chronicles 28.9]

This is not bad advice from a father to a son!

I want to focus on the word "intimately" today. In a period where time is moving at an unprecedented speed, the one thing in Christian devotion that stands to suffer the most is intimacy with God.

Busyness is the disease, and ultimately, the death of all relationships. Busyness usurps and weakens every relationship in one's life.

Here's a thought: through technology we are in contact with myriads of people compared to relatively few years ago. The irony of this fact is that the sheer quantity of relationships in any given person's life today prevents quality in any of those relationships! Why? Because relationships require time.

Intimacy with God requires time with God. Period.

The statement above is supported by every instance in the Bible of various characters withdrawing from their particular society to spend time with God. Moses, Elijah, Daniel, Jesus, Paul, and John the Revelator are perfect examples.

Just as these Bible characters dedicated time with God in order to accomplish Biblical things, no less will we need to dedicate time to God to accomplish what we are called to do.

Time with God is not an option. Intimacy only comes with time. David's words to Solomon stand the test of time: "If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever."

Father, I want to be found spending more and more time with You!
