Watch What You Say

The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words. [Proverbs 10.32]

Is what I say helpful or not?

You know, if we would simply think before speaking and ask ourselves the question above, how might our influence and relationships with people look?

But, it is more than our influence and relationships with others that benefit when we are mindful of what we say:

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. [Proverbs 10.19]

Yes, our words matter to us too. Excessive words lead to sin.

So it genuinely makes good sense to monitor not only what we say, but how much we say as well! Proverbs 10 most certainly provides the basis of the well-known saying, "If you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all."

As silly as we think a vow of silence might be, it could indeed be a good practice just for the sake of raising our own awareness of what we say.

Father, Proverbs 10 has given me a reminder to watch what and how much I say. Help me remain mindful of the importance of what I say in every circumstance.
