Man's Idols Today

This is what the LORD says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the LORD who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the LORD, have spoken! [Jeremiah 9.23-24]

There are three categories listed in the passage above that describe three things that have become man's idols in the earth today: knowledge, power, and money.

Knowledge would include all sciences, literature, and medicine.

Power would include government, politics, military, and weapons.

Money would include the economy, stock market, and wealth.

The LORD is clear that true wisdom boasts only in Him. Why? Because throughout God's Word He has made unmistakable claim to His superiority over all these things - things that man tends to rely so heavily upon (worship). In fact, according to the passage above, God delights in Who He is and how that affects His own.

In other words, God wants us to understand that love, justice, and righteousness, by design, transcend knowledge, power, and money. A truly wise person will live in this understanding and glorify God Who gives it.

Father, I want to live in the understanding that Your Kingdom - Your love, justice, and righteousness - is all that is worthy of my pursuit. I want to live in the understanding that knowledge, power, and money are simply benefits of knowing You and become idols outside of that context.
