But Jehu did not obey the Law of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He refused to turn from the sins that Jeroboam had led Israel to commit. [2 Kings 10.31]
This is a sad statement. Even after all Jehu did to wipe out Baal worship in Israel, he still held on to the sins of Jeroboam which had to do with gold calves.
It seems the "gold calf" thing recurred in Israel starting when they were at Mt Sinai where Aaron made a gold calf claiming it was Israel's god who brought them out of Egypt.
The bottom line of the gold calf thing is that Israel made images to worship that they were specifically instructed not to do. In so doing, they took glory from God to Whom it belonged and attributed it to images made by man. The harm in this comes from a shift of trust - from God to images made by man.
When God demands that we trust Him alone for everything, He means trust Him alone for everything.
We would all do well to examine our lives so that we might see whether we are trusting in God or trusting in man. But be forewarned, if you make a sincere and Biblically-based review of your life, you may not like what you find.
Or, we could just all skip the self-examination and be content. Right?
Father, I want to trust in You alone. I realize there are many substitutes in this life for my provision in every realm, but I want to be found trusting You - even if it makes me a fool in the eyes of the world.
