Then David said to the young man who had brought the news, “Where are you from?” And he replied, “I am a foreigner, an Amalekite, who lives in your land.” “Why were you not afraid to kill the LORD’s anointed one?” David asked. Then David said to one of his men, “Kill him!” So the man thrust his sword into the Amalekite and killed him. “You have condemned yourself,” David said, “for you yourself confessed that you killed the LORD’s anointed one.” [2 Samuel 1.13-16]
If we miss the implications of this story about God's anointing, we have missed the whole thing.
Two times that we know of, David himself could have easily killed Saul. However, David did not kill Saul because David yielded his own protection to the authority of God - God's anointing upon Saul.
The thing about God's anointing is that it is a spiritual thing. In a highly secular society, like we live in today, very little is understood about the meaning of God's anointing. Consequently, when a society gives little to no attention to God's anointing, very little power associated with God's anointing is manifest.
If David gave absolute yield to God's anointing on rebellious Saul, how much more today should we give yield to God's anointing on Jesus? And, if we believe Jesus and His Word, then we are compelled to give yield to God's anointing on ourselves!
For this reason alone, we must understand Jesus' repeated rebukes of His disciples for their lack of faith! For the most part, the disciples failed to recognize the anointing on Jesus and they failed consequently to grasp God's anointing on themselves!
But then came the Day of Pentecost following Jesus' resurrection and ascension to heaven!
You see, unless we acknowledge and yield to the anointing of God - the work of the Holy Spirit upon our lives, then we are powerless against the natural forces of the world and nature that would prevent us from accomplishing the will of God, as it is in heaven, on earth.
The point of God's anointing is not so we will all have ministries of healing or wealth. The point of God's anointing is that we will declare God's forgiveness for all who repent while sickness and poverty (or any curse for that matter) cannot stand in the way!
We have record of David's understanding of God's anointing preserved in the Bible so we might also understand.
Father, help us all to understand and yield to Your anointing as it is upon us today through the presence and work of Your Holy Spirit!
