Pray With Sincerity

Then all the military leaders, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, approached Jeremiah the prophet. They said, “Please pray to the LORD your God for us. As you can see, we are only a tiny remnant compared to what we were before. Pray that the LORD your God will show us what to do and where to go.” [Jeremiah 42.1-3]

Wow, what a sincere request!

NOT!

As chapter 42 and 43 reveal, those in Judah who made this request we NOT asking for God to tell them what to do. But instead they wanted Jeremiah to tell them to go to Egypt.

How many times do we go to God saying, "show me what to do!" when, in fact, we are really soothing our consciences by praying, but have no intention of doing what the LORD says?

God's people must be certain their prayers are not just "abracadabra's"; incantations that, in and of themselves carry supposed power.

Prayer is nothing if it is not total and complete submission to God and His Word (His will).

Father, help me to pray with sincerity.
