Got Pride?

You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains. ‘Who can ever reach us way up here?’ you ask boastfully. [Obadiah 1.3]

You have been deceived by your own pride... That is quite an indictment.

Pride is a heart issue. Perhaps that is exactly why Jeremiah said:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? [Jeremiah 17.9]

Is it not amazing how much effort has been exerted of late to convince people to "follow their hearts"?

Could it be that we are in the shape we are in today because we have followed our hearts (that are deceitful and desperately wicked)? I think so.

The Bible does not teach us to follow our hearts. The Bible teaches man to follow God; His Holy Spirit as demonstrated in the life of Jesus.

To follow our own hearts makes us gods unto ourselves. Idolatry.

To take pride in "who I am" is to embrace deceit. And, when one embraces deceit, the only outcome will be tragedy. Is it any wonder that the modern sexual perversion movement has embraced the word "pride"?

Sexual deviance is not the only evidence of "pride" however. There are all manner of out-of-sort situations found in mankind traceable to pride.

It's time we stop following our hearts and start following God.

Father, forgive me for not following You alone.
