About that time David’s son Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, began boasting, “I will make myself king.” So he provided himself with chariots and charioteers and recruited fifty men to run in front of him. [1 Kings 1.5]
I will make myself king...
At those words, Adonijah was off to a bad start.
How many huge mistakes have been made following the words, "I will do such and such for myself..."?
Jesus was very clear about how this works:
"...whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant." [Matthew 20.26b]
Jesus promoted humility as leadership. Jesus demonstrated humility as leadership on the Cross.
If we would just meditate on humility as our way to lead, we would do much better.
Here is a great place to interject that intercession is likely our most effective place to exercise humility. And, by "exercise" I mean exactly that - exercise our humility in prayer so that when we are in person, humility will come naturally.
Father, help us to aspire to humility.
