End Of Life

As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing. [2 Timothy 4.6-8]

There is something very comforting about this passage from Paul's second letter to Timothy.

These are the words of a man who (at least in his own mind) is about to die. Unlike so many "optimistic" statements made by Paul throughout his ministry, this statement reveals Paul's certainty of his approaching death. But, instead of alarm, Paul conveys a peaceful anticipation of meeting the Lord face to face. Paul is confident he has reached the end of his life.

Mind you, that Paul is in prison (again) while writing this letter to Timothy. It would appear that the certainty of his approaching death is tied to that fact. In all likelihood an execution date had been set. But Paul was at total peace with it. And, from his wording of it, Paul was looking forward to it.

But Paul didn't leave us hanging. Paul was very clear that "all who eagerly look forward to His appearing..." could look forward the same "prize" - that crown of righteousness given by God to those who finish the race - those who have fought the good fight.

Father, I want to have every bit of the same attitude found in Paul when the time of my departure from earth approaches!
