The Deception Of Sin

You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. [Hebrews 3.13]

Sin deceives people. It started in the Garden of Eden and nothing has changed since that time.

When Adam and Eve sinned, they hid from God. Why did they hide from God? Because their hearts became hardened against God. Their sin of "eating the fruit" sealed (if you will) their wrong belief that God had been withholding something good from them. It hardened their hearts against God and so a general distrust of God infected their souls and they hid from Him.

Perhaps we could all benefit from the consideration that sin hardens our hearts against God... I mean, sometimes, sin looks good, but if I could just consider its effect of hardening my heart against God, I would find a little more strength to resist it. I don't want my heart hard against God!

The lie of sin is that it will give some sort of satisfaction. But, in reality, the goal of sin is to harden our hearts against God. The problem with a hard heart is that it disqualifies/removes itself from receiving anything from God. So this really is a problem considering that God is our source for everything including life itself!

So we must encourage one another not to believe the lies of sin - the lies of the devil. And, like the writer of Hebrews states, we need to go so far as to "warn" each other every day against this tragedy of separating ourselves from God!

Father help me to be more aware of the deception of sin and to share that awareness with those around me.
