Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. [Ephesians 5.17]
Well now, that is simple, right?
We have made this all too complicated.
"What is God's will for my life?" can be heard among believers more than any other question.
I am going to be a little tough on us (believers) for a minute. If we know anything at all about the Bible - even if only the New Testament - and even then if only the Gospels, then we should NEVER ask the question, "What is God's will for my life?"
Jesus was very clear: "Do as I do." (my paraphrase, but the meaning is clear throughout Jesus' ministry on earth as recorded in the Gospels).
What is it about the life and ministry of Jesus that we do not understand? That He prayed? That He taught? That He healed? That He fed multitudes? That He performed miracles? That He had no other focus but to lay down His life for others?
Here is the problem: Christians are told clearly what to do - there are four different accounts of Jesus' life that document it - and we still ask, "What is God's will for my life?"
We should be ashamed to ask "What is God's will for my life?" even if we have only scarcely read the Bible! But instead, Christendom has untold volumes of books and self-help materials all focused on the question, "What is God's will for my life?"
What is wrong with us??? I will tell you what is wrong with us - we are stubborn and proud! God has told us what to do and we come back to Him hoping for a "Plan B." Well, there is no "Plan B" in the Kingdom of God.
Plan A for those Who follow God's will is to live "Christ" in the earth today. Period.
All the self-obsession the world has convinced the masses (even the church) to be necessary for a "complete life" is a LIE! There is no "balance" in Christ - the scales are not just tipped, but maxed-out that our lives are not our own to do with as we please! God's will is that we live like Jesus. God's will is that we look like Jesus. God's will is that we sound like Jesus. God's will is that we ARE Jesus to this lost and dying world in which we live!
This won't be resolved in 'understanding our personality type.' This won't be resolved in seminars and self-help training. This won't be resolved in better understanding and celebrating ourselves! IT WILL BE RESOLVED WHEN WE LAY DOWN OUR LIVES, TAKE UP THE CROSS OF OF CHRIST AND FOLLOW HIM!
No, it is not a popular message. No amount of theology or doctrine studies will change it. It is the message of Jesus and it is not up for alteration or modification. It is the message of Jesus and it is as relevant today as it was when He walked the earth. Jesus said, "Follow me." No options, no alternates.
Father, I am convicted. forgive me for even asking what Your will is when holding a Bible in my hand and the knowledge of it in my heart.
