Too Heavenly Minded (To Be Any Earthly Good?)

Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. [Colossians 3.1-3]

Paul mentions the "realities of heaven." What should we make of that?

Can we see the realities of heaven? No.

Can we touch the realities of heaven? No.

So, what is the big deal about the realities of heaven? Well, namely, that they are REAL.

What then, are the realities of heaven? For starters, they are everything that is holy and good. Salvation is a reality of heaven. Heath is a reality of heaven. Wealth is a reality of heaven. Peace is a reality of heaven. Joy is a reality of heaven. Fellowship is a reality of heaven. Eternal life is a reality of heaven.

Is death a reality of heaven? No. Neither are sickness, disease, lack, loss, suffering, hardships, and turmoil realities of heaven. Why? Because heaven is where God is with Jesus at His right hand. These things simply cannot exist in the holy presence of God!

Can a person be too heavenly minded then? We often hear about folks who are too heavenly minded to be any earthly good - but is that really the case? Is it not instead true that unless we are too heavenly minded, we will never bring about any earthly good? (Think Jesus here) The fact is, there is no earthly "good" that does not come from heaven! So, wouldn't it make sense to get a little more heavenly minded? Hint: Yes it would.

Think about it, half the time, Jesus' disciples didn't have a clue what Jesus was saying. But when it came to feeding thousands of people or raising the dead, Jesus marched right in and did it. I believe with all my heart that had Jesus spent all His time sitting around the campfire telling worthless jokes (relevant as that may have made Him to His disciples) there would have been no miracles recorded in the Gospels!

Be sure of this: Jesus was too heavenly minded! He was too heavenly minded for sickness to resist. He was too heavenly minded for death to resist. He was too heavenly minded for lack and hunger to resist. He was too heavenly minded to be overcome by Satan. He was too heavenly minded to be influenced by earthly facts! He had set His mind on the realities of heaven!

We can have no hope of looking or acting like Jesus in the earth today unless we too become too heavenly minded.

Father, I want to be not just "heavenly minded," but "too heavenly minded." I want to be too heavenly minded for the alleged 'real' things of earth to stand in the way of the eternal realities of heaven!
