Stars and Lampstands

This is the meaning of the mystery of the seven stars you saw in my right hand and the seven gold lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. [Revelation 1.20]

If Jesus gave this information as explanation of a mystery, then I think there must be some significant reason for it!

The very fact that John was introduced to Jesus in these opening statements of this Revelation is important. But the fact that Jesus was introduced with the seven stars and lampstands must have great importance as well.

In it's simplest form, the stars are said to be angels. Angels are messengers. The stars then most likely represent the message of the churches.

Lampstands give light from the oil they contain. Oil is most often representative of the Holy Spirit. But the lampstand is necessary to house the oil.

The fact of the number of churches defined here is no doubt of extreme importance. The number 7 always represents completion, God, and rest in the Bible, so this context would be no different. But what does that mean? Is the number 7 here about variety or time? My thoughts are that, in the entire context of Revelation, it might make most sense that this "7” is about time (as much of Revelation is).

It is obvious that I have very little revelation in myself of the meaning of this... So, I will wait to see if perhaps I gain some as it plays on out...

Father, please help me to understand the Revelation.
