That night the king had trouble sleeping, so he ordered an attendant to bring the book of the history of his reign so it could be read to him. [Esther 6.1]
There is definitely a lesson for us all here.
When Xerxes had trouble sleeping, he knew his life had problem. The only way to find that problem was obviously to review his life!
Xerxes, in the midst of trouble, considered his life and reign as king of Persia. It was in this review of his life that Xerxes realized what was wrong: he had not rewarded a man who saved his life.
I think sometimes when we experience trouble sleeping - a general restlessness about our life and purpose, we too need to review our lives. It is a simple task but has the potential to yield great benefit!
Most of us however don't have the time to review our lives.
How sad is that?
Father, help me to take the time to review my life when sleep is taken away from me. Help me, in those times of unknown trouble to look carefully at my life. I am confident You will reveal what I need to do to get back to a place of rest!
