And there by the Ahava Canal, I gave orders for all of us to fast and humble ourselves before our God. We prayed that he would give us a safe journey and protect us, our children, and our goods as we traveled. For I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to accompany us and protect us from enemies along the way. After all, we had told the king, “Our God’s hand of protection is on all who worship him, but his fierce anger rages against those who abandon him.” So we fasted and earnestly prayed that our God would take care of us, and he heard our prayer. [Ezra 8.21-23]
I think a problem with modern Christianity is revealed through this scripture passage from Ezra today.
We make all the claims in the world about how God takes care of us, but, unlike Ezra, we get insurance.
So, we really don't have to fast and earnestly pray because insurance will take care of us. We don't need God, we have insurance!
How do I know this is so? Because I know we don't fast and earnestly pray for protection from the things we are insured for!
One may call it "culture" if he wishes to do so, but there is no excuse for faithlessness. What's worse is that it is a bad representation upon God.
I am not on a crusade against insurance. But I am very much convicted that 'God's people' do not actually trust Him like they claim.
I challenge any reader here to consider what a majority of television advertisements are about: insurance and drugs. We are led to believe that all of life's material and medical needs have remedies - but it is not God.
We, like Ezra, should be ashamed.
Father, I am ashamed of my faithlessness.
