As they studied the Law, they discovered that the LORD had commanded through Moses that the Israelites should live in shelters during the festival to be held that month. [Nehemiah 8.14]
This is a long time after the Law was given. The Festival of Shelters had been a big thing at one time. However, it had been forgotten.
Forgotten? Yes, forgotten.
Without attempting to over analyze this, I think it is appropriate that we should carefully consider the Bible with a particular emphasis on things we have possibly forgotten.
The problem with this 'careful consideration' is that it is likely to call modern Christians into question on some of our practices (or lack thereof). But, we live in a different culture, right?
What is it that we have left off and forgotten? What are the forgotten ways, if any? It is everything that the Bible, in the fullness of Jesus' Advent and Resurrection, teaches us. It definitely includes everything Jesus instructed His followers to do.
Oh wow. We have some catching up to do.
Father, forgive me for ignoring Bible instruction in the name of 'culture.' Forgive me - forgive us - for making Christianity what we want it to be instead of what Jesus said it is!
