If At First You Don't Succeed...

Then King David was told, “The LORD has blessed Obed-edom’s household and everything he has because of the Ark of God.” So David went there and brought the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with a great celebration. After the men who were carrying the Ark of the LORD had gone six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. And David danced before the LORD with all his might, wearing a priestly garment. So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the LORD with shouts of joy and the blowing of rams’ horns. [2 Samuel 6.12-16]

If at first you don't succeed...

Probably, the first time, in David's haste, he overlooked an important factor in transporting the Ark of the LORD's covenant.

We should be so observant as to avoid similar tragedy in our own lives regarding that which is devoted to God. Sometimes, in our worship and devotion, we forget important facets of truth regarding our relationship with God that are non-negotiable. One that comes to mind is that God refuses to share His glory (the glory He gave us to give back to Him) with any one or thing.

God did not go to all the trouble to repeatedly define His character throughout the Bible as THE ONE AND ONLY GOD Who is jealous for our praise and devotion, for us to give glory to anything or anyone else.

Am I splitting hairs here? Ask David - consider Uzzah.

Perhaps we would all do well to consider the Source of our lives in every circumstance. How would this practice alter what we say and do? I think drastically. How would this practice alter our circumstances? Perhaps just as drastically.

Father, You are God. You alone deserve all glory. Please forgive me for giving glory to any other and, just as importantly, forgive me for receiving glory that does not belong to me.
