Not All Freedom Is Good!

“Therefore, this is what the LORD says: Since you have not obeyed me by setting your countrymen free, I will set you free to be destroyed by war, disease, and famine. You will be an object of horror to all the nations of the earth. [Jeremiah 34.17]

So here is what our sin does: it sets us free.

We here a lot today about being "set free." We hear it a lot among non-believers too. We hear of people being set free from Christianity as well as from non-Christianity.

It is interesting that the words "set free" are used (at least in the New Living Translation). Other translations similarly use the word "freedom" in this particular context. These words are Kingdom terminology because "kingdom" has to do with rule and authority. "Kingdom" has to do with royalty and servitude.

The thing is, to be set free from God is to be set free to everything that is not God... war disease, and famine. This is a clear indicator that these things are not God-things but are quite the opposite.

So, being "set free" may not be all it would seem at first! Freedom is only good in the right way! Not all freedom is good!

Father, help me to be free in the right way. I want to be free from the world and its war, disease, and famine. I certainly do not want to be free from You!
