“Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!” [1 Samuel 17.32]
Here is a word picture of the spirit within David. It was a spirit of faith and confidence. It was not foolish verbal nonsense because David actually had experience in dangerous situations. David had killed lions and bears to rescue sheep under his care.
Surely, when David encountered lions or bears when tending sheep, his method to overcome them was not only intentional but swift. Otherwise, the sheep would be quickly lost to the jaws and claws of the attacking animal.
No different was David's response to Goliath. He did not waste time with more challenging talk - he simply stated his purpose to Goliath and then killed him. The context is very clear that he ran out to Goliath without hesitation, killed Goliath without mistake, and beheaded Goliath without reservation. Job done.
Yes, job done - and done well.
The lesson for us in this is huge. The spirit of a conqueror was in David. We would do well to understand what it was that developed that spirit in David.
Father, help me to have the spirit of a conqueror as I see and understand my role on earth (like Jesus') to apply Your will on earth as it is in heaven.
