The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions. [Deuteronomy 29.29]
How about this verse? Even though God has revealed great and wonderful things to us, there is more about Him that we do not and cannot know. But the nice thing is, we will not be held responsible for what He has not revealed to us. However, we ARE very much responsible for what God has revealed about Himself and His will for us.
Having said this, there is little excuse for not perusing the Bible for every detail and fact that we can learn.
Knowledge is a funny thing though. Are there boundaries as to where knowledge of God comes from? Is the Bible the only source of knowledge about God? If then the Bible is the only source of the knowledge of God, is it right to gain knowledge from sources outside the Bible that affects the way we think of God?
These can be tricky questions!
Because men were involved in the selection of what ancient writings 'made the cut' (were in agreement about God and His story), can we definitively say then that the Bible is the exhaustive and exclusive source for all that is to be known about God?
Then, there is the Holy Spirit Who, reveals to us great and awesome things about God and His will. If the Holy Spirit is indeed from God, is it not right to conclude that what He reveals is included in that for which God's people are accountable?
The thing is, we have the opportunity to spend out entire lifetimes figuring this all out. I say "opportunity" because that is what I believe it is. I am greatly privileged to have a moment-by-moment, ongoing encounter with God. I am greatly privileged to respond here to what I am learning every day. Anyone who, for whatever reason, would scour these writings of mine would certainly conclude that I think one way on one day and another way on another day! I could be wrong, but I think this is okay because I remain committed to trying to learn more about Him every day.
I wish I could learn every detail about God on one day! But I cannot. So, I take what I can each day and add it to my personal database of knowledge - this sometimes causes me to think differently about something that as late as yesterday I may have had a distinctly alternate view of. I am not writing here to be right. I am writing here to be growing. If my writing evidences growth in my relationship with God, then this is good!
Father, I am extremely privileged to know You and learn more about You each day I live. Help me on this journey to enjoin others who will also engage in this lifelong quest based on the amazing gift of one moment in history - Jesus!
