I also discovered that the Levites had not been given their prescribed portions of food, so they and the singers who were to conduct the worship services had all returned to work their fields. I immediately confronted the leaders and demanded, “Why has the Temple of God been neglected?” Then I called all the Levites back again and restored them to their proper duties. And once more all the people of Judah began bringing their tithes of grain, new wine, and olive oil to the Temple storerooms. [Nehemiah 13.10-12]
I completely understand that worship in the Temple is no longer required to have relationship with God. However, worship of God is still required to have relationship with God! Furthermore, it's not so much that worship is required as it is that any genuine relationship with God cannot be separated from worship! Likewise, genuine worship of God will include corporate worship of Him with His people.
That being said, does it not make sense that, for any corporate worship gatherings, there be people in charge? In other words, don't we need someone to organize and execute corporate worship? Don't we need someone to prepare and maintain a place to worship? Don't we need someone to offer the general direction of the worship (be it reading the Word, singing, making music, gathering and handling offerings, preaching, etc.)?
In short, if the Church today is to fulfill its need for corporate function, it will require dedicated people to facilitate that corporate function.
Father, help us to understand our need for people to facilitate our corporate worship of You. Help us also not lose sight that tending to this corporate worship though does not negate our individual responsibility to worship You!
