The Cross

Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, “I am thirsty.”  A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.  When Jesus had tasted it, he said, “It is finished!”  Then he bowed his head and released his spirit. [John 19.28-30]

Jesus knew...

Of course He knew!  It was what His whole life existed to do!  Everything else in Jesus' life was inconsequential compared to the cross.

As I read the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion, I could not help but think of the moment when Jesus was nailed to the cross.  I realized that, unlike all the Easter plays we have all seen whether elaborate and simple, there was no platform upon which Jesus stood on that cross.  No, His 'platform' was the nail driven through His feet into the cross.  And this was all done while Jesus was conscious.

Father, help me to consider the cross today.  Help me to understand that there is no way I am even capable of such a feat.  Help me to understand that mine and the destinies of every living soul were altered (contingent upon faith) by the work of Jesus on the cross.
