Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.” [Mark 15.2]
Once again, the Gospels are in general agreement regarding Jesus' limited conversation with Pilate. Jesus responded to the direct question about His identity but fell silent to the accusations against Him.
The depth of the meaning of this is beyond me I think. But at least I realize there is depth to it!
Jesus would not deny Who He was. However, in order to sacrificially carry the weight and burden of the sin of mankind, Jesus could not refute the false accusations against Him. Those accusations, misplaced as they were, assigned necessary guilt for the punishment Jesus would receive. His perfect innocence coupled with His silence in refuting the injustice of the accusations against Him transported Him to a battleground not of this world - a battleground spiritual in nature, where He and the accuser of the brethren, Satan, would settle once and for all the destiny of souls whose hearts turned to God.
Redemption is a beautiful thing.
Thank You, God.
