Oh, We Sing Songs...

The Levites who returned with them were Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, and Mattaniah, who with his associates was in charge of the songs of thanksgiving.  Their associates, Bakbukiah and Unni, stood opposite them during the service. [Nehemiah 12.8-9]

I always find it interesting that so much emphasis was given to singing and praise in the protocol of Temple worship.

I think not nearly enough attention is given to thanksgiving and praise when God's people gather today.  Oh, we sing songs...

The prescribed Temple practices give us a good idea of what pleases God when it comes to our outward devotion to Him.  There is more to worshiping God than just 'singing a song or two' - much more.  It involves, first of all, a heart willing to press through in worship until something in the will is broken and the Spirit of God is then able to wash clean parts hitherto isolated and dirty.

This does not typically take place in a "prescribed song service."  No, it requires nothing to do with a clock or timer - it cannot be confined to the limits of a 30-minute television broadcast.  It cannot be rushed in order to process through three services on a Sunday morning!  NO!  God's Spirit will not be man-handled that way!

One thing I see about Temple worship is that the people (leaders and people alike) planned some time.  Just a day or so ago, it was mentioned that there were literally hours spend reading the Book of the Law.  Today, we can't stand more than a few verses of the Bible.  Is it any wonder we do not see the LORD move in mighty manifestations today?

There is a right way to come to God - we need to focus on that right way, and not worry about our plans.

Father, help me to understand and even promote the right way to come to You!
