Too Big For His Britches!

One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben.  They incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly.  They united against Moses and Aaron and said, “You have gone too far!  The whole community of Israel has been set apart by the Lord, and he is with all of us.  What right do you have to act as though you are greater than the rest of the Lord’s people?” [Numbers 16.1-3]

Back a few days ago, I made some comments in regard to the Kohathite clan and their additional responsibilities for the sacred objects of the Tabernacle.  Korah (a co-conspirator in the incident above) was a descendant of Kohath and, as such, was included in the elevated level of responsibility as described in Numbers 7.

As the story goes, Korah did not fare well in his "concerns."

Could it be that in the position of responsibility that Korah held, that perhaps he felt he should have further responsibility?  Could it be that people in authority are at elevated risk of seeking further authority that results in their downfall?

How many times have we seen this happen?  A person is given some elevated role of responsibility only to assume more responsibility than they have been given, resulting in ultimate failure of their intended role altogether.  It is a sad but real potential of authority.

My folks would say, "He got too big for his britches!"

Father, help me to understand what roles You have given me.  Help me to remain faithful to those roles without making assumptions as to further responsibilities!
