Obedience or Reluctant Compliance?

Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night.  Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron.  “If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!” they complained.  “Why is the Lord taking us to this country only to have us die in battle?  Our wives and our little ones will be carried off as plunder!  Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”  Then they plotted among themselves, “Let’s choose a new leader and go back to Egypt!” [Numbers 14.1-4]

I cannot help but wonder how many times the LORD has shown me the way in which to walk and yet I chose to look at daunting circumstances and backed away in defeat.

I wonder if I am facing some kind of "God opportunity" right now?

It is noteworthy in this story that the people, although they did not obey at first, made an attempt to later obey... but it did not work out then!  Obedience is not the same as reluctant compliance.  Reluctant compliance is the exact same in God's sight as outright rebellion.  We only get one opportunity to obey the first time.

Fast forward to Jesus telling the parable of the son who refused to obey at first... hmm.

Each of us should stop and consider our life and how it compares to what the LORD has directed us to do.

Father, of course You know my heart.  You also know what it is You intend for me to do - where it is You want me to go - how it is You intend for me to proceed.  Help me to take the opportunity You lay before me - help me to walk in the light You give.  Father, I want to please You by obeying You.
