The people of Beth-shemesh were harvesting wheat in the valley, and when they saw the Ark, they were overjoyed! The cart came into the field of a man named Joshua and stopped beside a large rock. So the people broke up the wood of the cart for a fire and killed the cows and sacrificed them to the Lord as a burnt offering. [I Samuel 6.13-14]
I know these were just cows, but they went against instinct and did the will of God.
These cows both had just given birth each to their first calf. Anyone that has ever been around cows knows the maternal instinct of a cow is to stay near and protect a newborn calf! But not these cows! Instead they were subject to the will of God and went totally against instinct and left the penned calves (undoubtedly bawling for their mothers!) and pulled the wagon with the Ark of the Covenant straight to Beth-shemesh.
What special cows!
Then, upon their arrival, the cows were promptly killed, butchered, and sacrificed to God. The end for the cows.
To modern animal rights activists, I suppose this story is a real heart-breaker!
Father, I realize that the Story of Your redemption is about people - not animals. Help us all to maintain that focus and not allow ourselves to be distracted with well-meaning (albeit misplaced) concern for things that ultimately do not matter!
