He Turned To God

When King Hezekiah heard their report, he tore his clothes and put on burlap and went into the Temple of the Lord. [II Kings 19.1]

Hezekiah was faced with a bad situation (to say the least). The highly-successful Assyrian army had set its sights on Jerusalem and everyone involved knew the outcome was quite predictable.

Before going any further however, I found it interesting that the Assyrian king's chief of staff was misinformed about Hezekiah's situation. He had confused Almighty God with one or more of the idols Hezekiah had destroyed and removed. Bad information!

Anyway, Hezekiah's response is perhaps the single greatest lesson any of us could learn. He turned to God. He simply went to God and sought help.

And, what's more, Hezekiah responded to the next threat by Assyria (given in form of a letter) in the same way:

After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the Lord’s Temple and spread it out before the Lord. [II Kings 19.14]

Again, Hezekiah turned to God. He simply went to God and sought help. The situation was bleak. The chance of anything good coming from the dilemma was non-existent. But Hezekiah still went to God.

In the face of insurmountable odds all I can do is go to God.

Father, I want to turn to You.
