But the people defiantly pushed ahead toward the hill country, even though neither Moses nor the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant left the camp. Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in those hills came down and attacked them and chased them back as far as Hormah. [Numbers 14.44-45]
When I read this, I just got a sick feeling. The Israelites simply did not understand the holiness of their God. If they sinned back then, how much more did mankind confuse the issue after that? And, if God departed from them at that time, how much more did their subsequent sinfulness require that God abandon them?
I think the point is that mankind has only gotten increasingly more sinful. And yet we still carry much of the same mentality that the Israelites displayed in their further disobedience of "marching on anyway." We put our thoughts above God's plan.
But today, our hardheartedness is that we fail to acknowledge Jesus. Obedience to God is easier than ever (faith in Jesus) and we still blow it!
Father, thank You for Jesus Christ!
