In all, thirty-one kings were defeated. [Joshua 12.24b]
Whether every number in the Bible had meaning written in, or, every number can simply be associated with something, I find it encouraging that thirty-one kings had been defeated up to this point in Israel's history. That's one for every day of the month.
If I may "spiritualize" today, I can easily find reason, from the thirty-one kings defeated, to thank God every day of the month for a victory in my life. Perhaps, as a good exercise then, it would be helpful to make a list of thirty-one things the LORD has done in my life and rehearse one of those every day.
Consistent with this line of thought, it is noteworthy that there are thirty-one chapters in Solomon's Proverbs. Again, that's one for every day of the month.
Maybe the number thirty-one has no meaning except a random number of kings Joshua and Israel defeated. Maybe the number thirty-one is just how the Proverbs divided up. Maybe.
However, in a world where people struggle to know how to relate to God, the number thirty-one may indeed provide, if nothing else, foundational support for a daily relationship with God. Finding thirty-one things to be thankful for and seeking wisdom every day of the month is a fine start.
Father, may I always be found thankful each and every day. And, may I be found seeking Your wisdom every day. Thank You for Your faithfulness to provide everything I need. So be it.
