‘Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator?’ [Job 4.17]
Eliphaz asked the question. And, what a question it was! People have wrestled with this question from then until now. People will continue to wrestle with this question.
Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator? No.
Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator? Yes, Jesus was.
Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator? Yes, in Jesus Christ.
If we can see it, the Gospel is presented in the three answers to these questions!
Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator? No: Man is sinful and cannot be innocent before God.
Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator? Yes, Jesus was: God sent His perfect Son Jesus to set aside his deity to become a perfect man to die an undeserved death on behalf of all imperfect mankind.
Can a mortal be innocent before God? Can anyone be pure before the Creator? Yes, in Jesus Christ: Imperfect men then, who repent and believe in Jesus, are made perfect, and therefore presentable to God, IN CHRIST.
As confusing as the book of Job is, and has been, throughout history to mankind, the Good News of Jesus Christ lies right there in the early chapters of the book. How truly amazing is that?
Father, thank You for showing us the Gospel of Jesus here in the 4th chapter of Job today. For all the other questions the book of Job might cause us to have, may we always find the simple message of salvation in Job 4.17. So be it!
