Dead Flies On A Window Sill

Now, O LORD our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone, O LORD, are God.” [2 Kings 19.19]

To fully understand this post, one should read today's OYCB reading in light of the events leading up to it.

By and large, believers today have developed a blind eye and a deaf ear to what Hezekiah said and did here in the context of today's OYCB reading. But we are fortunate and blessed that, by His Holy Spirit working through His Word, God has begun to restore vision and hearing to those who purpose to see and hear!

Although Hezekiah did basically bankrupt the Temple to appease Assyria's King Sennacherib's attack on Jerusalem, that action ultimately did no good. Sennacherib would not be appeased until he had thoroughly defied Hezekiah's God.

At the point Hezekiah prayed the prayer above, he had exhausted any benefit money could afford. God was Judah's only hope.

How many times do we find ourselves in a very similar situation? Let me be specific...

Like every other scientific and technological accomplishment of man, the medical industry today including services, pharmaceuticals, equipment and devices involves astronomical amounts of money globally. And yet, people continue to die of heart disease, diabetes and cancer like dead flies on a window sill.

In further consideration of this "dead fly on a window sill" analogy, the window glass that allows light to shine through, is the very thing that prevents the fly from enjoying the environment the light calls him to. In fact, the light shining through the window is what the fly needs but the glass prevents him from experiencing its full benefit. The promise of well-being is indeed there, but, unable to identify and overcome the glass that stands between him and the light, the fly ultimately dies having never reached the environment the light leads him to.

Nothing better describes the disappointing promises of medicine (or any other accomplishment of man) than this dead fly on a window sill analogy. God, Who, ironically,  is Light, calls us to trust Him alone for every need in our lives: namely health, wealth and safety. While claiming to work with God or, even for God, man's solutions (windows) give very tangible evidence of the "light" we seek and need but ultimately do not (because they cannot) allow full unrestricted access to the environment of well-being His Light calls us to.

Hezekiah emptying the treasures of the Temple was just like a fly attempting to reach light through glass. It looked like the thing to do, but working with Sennacherib in that way proved futile! Sennacherib wanted only to defy and defile God Whose treasures Hezekiah used to try to appease him. But when Hezekiah turned to God alone for the "light" of deliverance, the "window" was opened - the glass removed - and Jerusalem was miraculously saved. The key word for Hezekiah to come to understand was "alone" - understanding that God alone would rescue Jerusalem.

Not ironically, man continues to pour riches into the promise of well-being shining through the window of man's systems, but that window sill remains a graveyard of unfulfillment. Many exhaust their financial resources only to die anyway. Is this the "blessing of God" we actually seek or is it a cruel mockery by the systems of this world to discourage our faith in God ALONE?

The more powerful Sennacherib became, the more boldly he defied God. It will be up to the reader here to decipher this!

Father, the world promises us blessings You said we should trust You alone for. The world doesn't mind enough of Your "light" shining through to attract us because it knows what attracts us can be used to trap us. Help us to see that no matter how good the offer of light "through the glass of man's accomplishments" seems, it remains a barrier between us and the environment of Your unrestricted blessings. May we trust You alone!
