In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe. [Psalm 4.8]
This is the statement of one who trusts God.
Whether lying down to rest for the moment, for the night, or from the life lived on earth, the true believer in God - one who has trusted in Jesus Christ - can "sleep" securely in peace.
Sleeping in peace is, therefore, a big deal. To do so requires a purposeful consciousness of God as the One Who keeps us safe. Whether it is safe to catch a quick nap or safe to enter heaven, one who trusts God can close his or her eyes in confidence, rest and peace.
So safe is the one who trusts God that every time they close their eyes in sleep, they have the contentment that they will wake again in the blessings of life on earth or the blessings of heaven - it really matters not which. This is because they go to sleep in the Kingdom. God's Kingdom is the only kingdom that is eternal. Kingdoms of this earth are temporal at best. But God's Kingdom is eternal.
Sleep is torment to the unbeliever. How could it be anything less not knowing what they might wake up to? The sad thing is, far too many "Christians" feel the same way.
Father, may I be mindful today of the blessings of sleep in Your Kingdom - having every assurance that I will wake to blessings either temporal or eternal. But most importantly, may I remain consciously aware that my life is hid with Christ in You.
