Emotions Can Be Deadly

Some time later Samson fell in love with a woman named Delilah, who lived in the valley of Sorek. [Judges 16.4]

Did Samson have any choice in falling in love with Delilah?

Here, probably more than anywhere in the Bible (or anywhere else for that matter), we see strong evidence that emotions must be controlled. Emotions can be deadly.

Samson's story, incredulous as it sounds, depicts the power of emotion to sway a person away from good judgement. While it is tempting to simply 'write off' Samson as an idiot, we must heed the warning of his story for ourselves. However it happened, Samson didn't just fall in love, he fell into stupid. And, that is precisely what sin does to all of us. The allure of sin is stupefying.

Father, I am so amazed at how sin can look so good and seems so right at times... Just like Delilah, sin unashamedly attracts us into what we know will destroy us. Forgive us, Father, for giving sin even a first thought.
