The LORD said to me, “Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place where I will rest my feet. I will live here forever among the people of Israel. They and their kings will not defile my holy name any longer by their adulterous worship of other gods or by honoring the relics of their kings who have died. They put their idol altars right next to mine with only a wall between them and me. They defiled my holy name by such detestable sin, so I consumed them in my anger. [Ezekiel 43.7-8]
I have been saying for some time now that God will not cohabit with idols. He does not wish to share our faith with anyone or anything else - He wants it all.
Here in this passage today, as a sidenote to the description given to Ezekiel of the Temple, we see no uncertain terms about how God feels about idols. The LORD expressed His disdain with the fact that idol altars were placed right next to His thus defiling His holy name and resulting in the people's destruction.
We must be diligent to remove idols from our lives. In other words, we cannot trust both God and idols in our lives.
What are idols? Anything or anyone we trust for that which God promised.
I know I sound like a broken record in repeating this, but at least I am in good company of the prophets!
Father, help me to further examine my life to recognize and eliminate idols from it!
