Then another message came to me from the LORD of Heaven’s Armies: “This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: My love for Mount Zion is passionate and strong; I am consumed with passion for Jerusalem! [Zechariah 8.1-2]
What I have to say here is not really relevant to the context of the passage above, except in the fact that as all the Scriptures point to Jesus (John 5.39), Mount Zion and Jerusalem mentioned here are representative of the Church.
The understanding that God is consumed with passion for Jerusalem gives perfect continuity with something Jesus pointed out in a certain conversation with one Nicodemus:
For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. [John 3.16]
God is consumed with love for all people. The sad truth is, however, only those who believe will enjoy the benefit of that love. In contrast, the glorious truth is, those who believe will enjoy the benefit of His love for all eternity.
Father, help us to retain the foundational mindset that You love all people. Likewise, help us understand that only the "faith"ful will enjoy the benefit of that love.
