Who Is This Prince?

“Son of man, give the prince of Tyre this message from the Sovereign LORD: “In your great pride you claim, ‘I am a god! I sit on a divine throne in the heart of the sea.’ But you are only a man and not a god, though you boast that you are a god. [Ezekiel 28.2]

If Ezekiel 28.12 begins a message from God to the king of Tyre (and he is representative of Satan), then who is the prince of Tyre addressed above?

I am going to suggest an answer: The prince of Tyre represents unredeemed mankind. I think my suggestion here accurate based entirely upon the content of Ezekiel 28.1-10.

The recurring accusation found in Ezekiel 28.1-10 is human pride. This pride is not at all unlike the pride the king of Tyre is accused of in Ezekiel 28.11-19. However, the distinction is clear between the prince of Tyre and the king of Tyre in that the prince is described in human terms while the king is described with angelic descriptions.

What does this mean? As simply as it can be stated, pride is the downfall of Satan and all who follow him.

In other words, any human found in pride is found in Satan (as opposed to in Christ). Furthermore, any person not found in Christ (the model of humility) can only be found in Satan (the king of pride).

This should give great reason for pause for anyone touting "Pride!"

Who is the prince of Tyre? Proud man.

Father, help us all to understand that pride has no place in a follower of Christ and therefore a follower of You.
