Kings And Priests

For this is what the LORD says: David will have a descendant sitting on the throne of Israel forever. And there will always be Levitical priests to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings and sacrifices to me.” [Jeremiah 33.17-18]

Now, wait a minute... Did Jeremiah miss it here?

If we fail to see Jesus in all the Old Testament, we will draw uninformed conclusions not only about this passage of Scripture, but many others throughout the Bible.

Specifically in the passage above, we must remember that Israel represents the Church. The head of the Church is Jesus, a descendant of David. While Jesus also served (and serves) as Priest, that same role (or work) is the commission of the Church.

No single word describes the work of a priest better than "intercessor." Here is Bible proof that Jesus served in that role AND that we are called to that same role:

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” And they divided His garments and cast lots. [Luke 23.34]

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. [1 Timothy 2.1]

And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth.” [Revelation 5.10]

These are just representative scriptures of many that document Jesus' and our kingly and priestly roles as intercessors.

But, to the point of Jeremiah 33.17-18, Jesus will always be head of the Church, and there will always be intercessors, as kings and priests, reconciling men unto God. Our submission to Jesus, puts us right in the middle of this. If we are not, then we can only conclude that we are not submitted to Jesus.

Father, may I be found interceding as a king and priest in Your Kingdom!
