Idol Alert!

“But you would not listen to me,” says the LORD. “You made me furious by worshiping idols you made with your own hands, bringing on yourselves all the disasters you now suffer. [Jeremiah 25.7]

There is significance to God's statement through Jeremiah, "idols you made with your own hands..."

I suppose it is one thing to worship an idol like the sun or the moon, but it seems quite another level of offense against God for man to worship something made with his own hands.

What is the motivation behind knowledge and technology today? It is to improve man's quality of life.

Here is the "tiny" problem with man improving his own life: God said He would give us quality of life (blessings).

No big deal, right? Or, is there a huge problem here?

If man is capable of improving his own life (that which God reserved for Himself), then man becomes a god unto himself. Can you say, "Idolatry"?

Of course, of course, we are not trying to make "idols!" But an idol is not what we "call it," but what purpose it serves! And, just because we say something is not an idol does not change the fact that it is indeed an idol if we trust it (for a benefit God promised). Uh-oh, this is getting serious!

We've all heard the phrase, "going on a witch hunt." But have we pondered the necessity of going on an idol hunt? To do so, where do we start? We start by candidly asking ourselves, "what are the things I trust in?"

I want to make one observation here, and I will leave it at that... "Medicine" has become an incredibly complex science in our day. Man's knowledge and technological advancements have enabled him to accomplish previously unthinkable achievements. This is the work of man (made with your own hands). But look at the result God predicts from that: bringing on yourselves all the disasters you now suffer. For all the research and advancement of medical science, it was that same research and advancement of medical science that brought the world Covid. Again, that is all I will say about that.

Father, help us to be on "idol-alert" at all times in our lives so that we might please You with our undivided faith!
