“Here is your spear, O king,” David replied. “Let one of your young men come over and get it. The LORD gives his own reward for doing good and for being loyal, and I refused to kill you even when the LORD placed you in my power, for you are the LORD’s anointed one. Now may the LORD value my life, even as I have valued yours today. May he rescue me from all my troubles.” [1 Samuel 26.22-24]
What a testimony! David's respect for the office of King of Israel before his own men and the men of Saul could not have been more profound.
When David's own men recognized and vocalized his opportunity to kill Saul previously in the cave, David refused. Now, they have seen it again.
When Saul's men realized David had spared Saul, they must have feared for their lives because they had indeed committed high treason for not effectively protecting the king. That must have been why David first addressed Abner after he had taken Saul's spear and water jug.
Shifting gears a bit... I find it interesting that later on, after Saul's death, that David would allow Abner, who clearly did not defend Saul, to come to him. As it turned out though, Joab killed Abner anyway.
Back on point...
David's understanding of anointing surpasses most all instances of such understanding in the Bible. His testimony about anointing is worthy of our consideration!
Father, help me to see and understand Your anointing as it relates to New Testament times.
