Stand Still

But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the LORD rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.” [Exodus 14.13]

"Just stand still and watch..."

Interestingly enough, I have been focusing a bit lately on the following passage from the New Testament:

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere. [Ephesians 6.10-18]

Notice that Paul used the word "stand" in discussing the believers' equipment.

In fact, every piece of equipment Paul describes is defensive with the exception of the sword of the Spirit. But, even then, Paul makes no reference to taking the offensive.

Why?

Why indeed!

Offensive maneuvers are used when acquiring territory. Defensive maneuvers, on the other hand, are for defending territory already occupied. There is something very spiritual and very deep in the implication of Paul instructing us to "stand" as it relates back to God telling Israel to stand!

Our defensive position says we already have what we are defending! We are NOT trying to get it - it is already ours! Think about that!

And, on top of what is already said here, God says, "stand still and watch [Me] - you won't need to fight"

Wow.

Thank You Father for Your Word and all it says to me today!
