A Word About Influence

When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he asked, “What are you really accomplishing here? Why are you trying to do all this alone while everyone stands around you from morning till evening?” [Exodus 18.14]

Thank God for good fathers-in-law! The magnitude of help Jethro gave Moses in his advice about delegating authority is huge.

I have, before now, not really attempted to understand how the groups worked that Jethro suggested. What was the hierarchy of this arrangement? There were groups of 1000, 100, 50, and 10. I wonder if the pyramid began with 10 or with an unknown number of leaders each over 1000? There is definitely some math to be done... maybe later...

For now however, it suffices to focus on the influence Jethro had on not only Moses, but the entire nation of Israel.

What I see here is that no matter how important one is (Moses), there is always room, and therefore the need, for wise counsel.

Father, thank You for wise counsel that You provide through the natural relationships in our lives (like in-laws).
