“Can a person do anything to help God? Can even a wise person be helpful to him? [Job 22.2]
Back on this same date in 2015 and then in 2019, I wrote articles about this verse. And, I still firmly believe what was written on those two days.
The magnitude of what Job's friend Eliphaz said here is greater than I think most will ever comprehend.
An overwhelming "NO!" should rise from the core of our being when we read these words. But I fear many of us secretly discount the dogma with which they were originally spoken and then written.
What do we say? "I got this!"
There is a fallen self-sufficiency in all of us that wants to exist outside the sustenance of God. Its pathetic attempt to undermine faith begins with the slightest confidence that our "help" contributes anything to our condition. This is the onset of human reasoning that the Apostle Paul would later point out prevents people from knowing God.
We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. [2 Corinthians 10.3-5]
To believe for a moment that we could "help" God is gross ignorance of Who God Is.
No, there is nothing we can do to help God!
Father, may I be found void of self-sufficiency in every area of my life!
