“But be very careful! You did not see the LORD’s form on the day he spoke to you from the heart of the fire at Mount Sinai. So do not corrupt yourselves by making an idol in any form—whether of a man or a woman, an animal on the ground, a bird in the sky, a small animal that scurries along the ground, or a fish in the deepest sea. And when you look up into the sky and see the sun, moon, and stars—all the forces of heaven—don’t be seduced into worshiping them. The LORD your God gave them to all the peoples of the earth. [Deuteronomy 4.15-19]
This passage really makes me think we might should consider all our decorations... I mean, it is also included in one of the Ten Commandments:
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind, or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands. [Deuteronomy 5.8-10]
Have we missed something with our little figurines we call decoration? As I look around just my office, I have to ask myself, "do I have idols in here?" And then, I ask myself, "does it matter since I do not worship them?"
God said we must not make idols for ourselves and He said we must not bow down to them. Did He mean we must not make them TO worship them or not make them OR worship them?
I will not make any dogmatic statements here but am committed to allowing the Father to speak to me further regarding this matter!
Father, help me to understand Your Word regarding idols and what they really are (and possibly are not).
