Then the LORD said to Moses, “Give these instructions to the Israelites: When you come into the land of Canaan, which I am giving you as your special possession, these will be the boundaries. [Numbers 34.1-2]
As Jesus indicated that the scriptures all point to Him, what do these "boundaries" say about the Kingdom of God?
The "Promised Land" was obviously a certain region where Israel could live and thrive - promised by God Almighty - but why the boundaries???
And, why were the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh allowed to dwell east of the Jordan river?
To see Jesus in all this is not really an easy task, but I believe He and His Kingdom can indeed be seen.
The Kingdom of God is necessarily limited to boundaries. The Kingdom of God is not "anything goes" but rather the full expression of the King and His wishes. Just because "Jesus paid it all" does not give Kingdom subjects the right to do as they wish! Jesus was very specific in the boundaries of life for His followers - to love, forgive and make disciples.
Now, about Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh... how do we see Jesus in this anomaly?
I believe the 'exception' made for Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh very much points to Jesus in His own words:
You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. [John 15.16]
Within the boundaries of the Kingdom of God, there exists the possibility to "ask." This is exactly what the daughters of Zelophehad did in asking for a grant of land in the absence of brothers (see Numbers 27.1-11).
Maybe what I am seeing here is a 'stretch' but at least I am looking for Jesus in it!
Father, as I continue reading the Old Testament, help me to clearly see Jesus as He said the Scriptures point to Him.
