We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. [2 Corinthians 10.3]
If believers today could just get this into their heads and hearts...
Jesus bewildered His followers by not establishing a worldly kingdom. However, He taught with a sense of urgency about the kingdom not of this world - the Kingdom of God.
In fact, Jesus taught His followers to put the Kingdom of God in priority above and beyond any and everything else (Matthew 6.33).
If we could only reset our default worldly thinking to Kingdom thinking, we would do much better! The problem lies in the fact that from early on in our lives we are indoctrinated with worldly thought. We are taught that science and math pretty much explain everything. We have consequently then seen 'spiritual' thinking as an accessory to life rather than life itself.
It's no wonder then that Paul would write the following:
Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God. [2 Corinthians 7.1]
The world defiles our body and spirit. Worldly thinking defiles our body and spirit. The irony of this is found when considering how "self"-centered the world teaches us to be - the very effort to preserve "self" Paul states is the very thinking that defiles body and spirit!
The solution to the problem described here will not come however with additional worldly thinking! The only solution to worldly thinking is to "cleanse ourselves" of it - get rid of it - and replace it with Kingdom thinking!
Jesus showed us what Kingdom thinking looks and acts like. It is not bound to the world and the world's thinking. How else would Jesus heal the sick, raise the dead, feed thousands with only morsels, walk on the water, and speak to the weather?
So, back to the opening verse above... We are in a war. It is nothing short of all-out warfare to cleanse ourselves of worldly thinking and set out minds upon Kingdom thinking!
Will we go to battle? The war is in our minds!
Father, help me to remain mindful today of the war that I am in. Help me to fight with fervency to cleanse myself of worldly thinking and remain Kingdom-aware at all times.
