Then the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, “Well, aren’t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?” But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” Jesus said, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.” [Mark 14.60-62]
Oh, this is good!
Jesus was silent before His accusers. Part of me thinks that must have infuriated them. But another part of me today sees something totally different.
It was entirely necessary that Jesus remain silent when faced with accusations. Why? Because it was necessary that He fully embrace every charge leveled against Him. Why? Because it wasn't for Him, it was for the guilty world - and there is nothing a guilty person can say.
However, Jesus did respond to the high priest's second question, "Are you the Messiah...?" Jesus' answer to that question did not refute the guilt He carried on our behalf, but made crystal clear that He was God.
The combination of these two facts results in our salvation!
Father, thank You for every single thing Jesus did for our edification, empowerment, and salvation!
