An Idol Is Anything That Is Given Glory That Belongs To God

Though the nations around us follow their idols, we will follow the LORD our God forever and ever. [Micah 4.5]

Most citizens of most nations cannot make this claim. In fact, even though a spotless and holy person might indeed follow the LORD himself, he cannot control what the rest of the nation of his citizenship does.

Could it be that Micah is speaking of the same nation the Psalmist spoke of in Psalm 33?

What joy for the nation whose God is the LORD, whose people he has chosen as his inheritance. [Psalm 33.12]

I am inclined to believe that both Micah and the Psalmist were indeed speaking of a nation undetermined by physical or political boundaries. Instead, they were speaking of the nation whose God is the LORD - that universal nation consisting of those whose hearts and lives are fully dedicated to Almighty God.

What we should learn here from Micah is that those whose God is the LORD do not follow idols.

It would be prudent here to point out the history of Israel and her kings. In the history of Israel's (and Judah's) kings, the astute student of the Bible will recall that the determination of a particular king's rating on the "good or bad" scale more often than not was determined by that king's record in dealing with idols. The better the king, the more he annihilated not only the worship of idols, but the
