Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power! [Psalm 98.1]
Why worship God?
That question seems like it has an obvious answer, right? But have you taken the time to meditate on what it says? Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done wonderful deeds. We worship God because of Who He is and what He has done.
Contrast.
What do money, medicine, science and technology do for us? Could it be said they do wonderful things? Could it be said they have given us victory over circumstances that would otherwise overcome us? Indeed it could.
And, here is where faith in God alone will cause the nation whose God is the LORD to manifest on the earth.
The question is, should it be said that money, medicine, science and technology do much for us? Look again at the verse above:
Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done wonderful deeds.
Let us back up for a moment... Let us look at something God has said about Himself...
Then God gave the people all these instructions: “I am the LORD your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. “You must not have any other god but me. “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. [Exodus 20.1-5]
Did you notice in this passage that God made particular mention of what He had done? You realize, don't you, that those things God did could have been attributed to Moses and Aaron, right? You realize those plagues could have been attributed to science, right? You realize the staffs that turned to snakes (both the magicians' and Aaron's) could have been attributed to technology, right? You realize that the Red Sea parting could have been attributed to the weather, right?
We must be very careful about attributing God's glory to anything or anyone else - whether it is technology, science, medicine, or money. God specifically pointed our His feelings about misplaced affection in Exodus 20.1-5 - He is jealous for ALL glory and simply will not share it with anything or anyone else.
How can we be absolutely sure that we are not giving misplaced affection to other things or people?
Father I want my affection to be to You and You alone. I can only depend on Your grace as I set out to do that in genuine faith.
